About Interpenpal
Interpenpal was born from a simple observation: the best way to learn a language is to use it with someone who speaks it natively. Not in a classroom simulation, not with an AI chatbot, but with a real human being who has stories to tell, questions to ask, and a genuine interest in connecting across cultures.
Our Mission
Our mission is to make meaningful language exchange accessible to everyone on the planet. We believe that every person deserves the opportunity to learn a new language, connect with someone from a different culture, and broaden their understanding of the world. Language barriers should not be barriers to human connection, and we are working every day to tear them down.
Our Story
Interpenpal started in 2022 when our founder, frustrated with the superficial nature of existing language exchange platforms, decided to build something different. Most platforms at the time were either glorified dating apps or sterile classroom environments. Neither felt right for what language exchange should be: a genuine, ongoing relationship between two people who help each other grow. We launched with a handful of members and a lot of idealism. Within months, word spread through language learning communities on Reddit, YouTube, and university campuses. Today, Interpenpal connects language learners in over 190 countries, and we are still growing every day.
What We Believe
Authenticity Over Perfection
We encourage members to write imperfectly and learn from their mistakes. Progress matters more than polish.
Respect Across Cultures
Every culture has value, every perspective matters, and every member deserves to be treated with dignity.
Access For Everyone
Language exchange should not be a luxury. We keep Interpenpal free so that anyone with an internet connection can participate.
Long-Term Relationships
We optimize for lasting connections, not quick matches. The best language learning happens over months and years of consistent practice.
Our Team
Interpenpal is built by a small, distributed team of language enthusiasts, engineers, and educators spread across four continents. We speak a combined total of nineteen languages, and every one of us uses the platform ourselves. That firsthand experience shapes every decision we make, from algorithm tweaks to new feature designs. We do not have a fancy office or a large marketing budget. What we have is a deep commitment to our community and a belief that technology can bring people closer together when it is designed with care.
